Are You Brushing Your Teeth Properly? Learn the Right Way to Brush

You brush your teeth every day, but are you doing it correctly? Chances are, you don’t give much thought to your brushing technique, and that may be causing your oral health to suffer. Our latest blog post from the office of John Carson, DDS shares the right way to brush your teeth for a healthier, more radiant smile.

The Basics

According to the American Dental Association, you should brush your teeth twice a day. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush that can easily fit inside your mouth. Brushes aren’t one size fits all, so be sure to find one that works for you. You should swap your toothbrush for a new one every few months, or sooner if the bristles are beginning to look worn or frayed. Your toothpaste should be approved by the ADA and contain fluoride.

The Process

Now that you have the appropriate tools, it’s time to brush your teeth. You should position your toothbrush so that it is at a 45-degree angle to your gumline. As you start to brush, use gentle motions to move the brush in short strokes. Be sure to get to all parts of your teeth, including the outside surfaces, inner surfaces, and top surfaces (chewing areas). You can easily clean the inside surfaces of your front teeth by angling your brush vertically. Brush for a full two minutes—once in the morning and again at bedtime.

Extra Tips

In addition to brushing your teeth properly, be sure to avoid foods or drinks with lots of sugar. Plaque and tartar can build up due to sugar consumption, which can damage your teeth over time. Additionally, flossing once a day is also recommended to remove food particles from between your teeth.
