Analyzing the Early Signs of a Cavity

Analyzing the Early Signs of a Cavity

Cavities are an extremely common oral health condition, but they can have serious impacts on your smile. If left untreated, cavities can lead to infection, severe tooth decay, gum disease, and even tooth loss. At John Carson, DDS, we’re here to arm you with the knowledge you need to spot cavities early in their development and keep them from coming back.

What Is a Cavity?

Cavities are a form of tooth decay. In essence, a cavity is a hole that forms in your tooth due to plaque build-up. This plaque leads to your tooth enamel being broken down by acids. This process can lead to a series of symptoms that can vary depending on the stage and severity of the decay. More severe cavities can even lead to gum disease

The Visible Signs of Cavities

Sometimes, the first sign of a cavity is visible to the naked eye. You might notice chalky white spots on the surface of your teeth, which can later turn into a brownish discoloration. As the decay progresses, the discolored areas may turn into small holes. However, it’s important to note that many cavities will not display visible symptoms until they have gotten worse and in many cases early cavities will also not have symptoms which is why it is important to see your dentist regularly and if you develop symptoms between visits let your dentist know immediately.

Signs and Symptoms  of Cavities

  • Tooth Sensitivity or Pain

One of the most common signs of a cavity is tooth sensitivity or discomfort. This pain may get worse when you eat or drink something hot, cold, or sweet. This discomfort may be sporadic at first, but as the cavity deepens, the pain can become more consistent.

  • Bad Breath or Unpleasant Taste

Persistent bad breath or an unpleasant taste in your mouth could also indicate a cavity. This is due to the bacteria present in the decayed area, which can cause these unpleasant symptoms. If you notice bad breath even after brushing your teeth, a cavity could be to blame.

  • Difficulty Chewing or Biting

If you’re having trouble chewing or if you feel a sudden pain when biting down, this might indicate a deeper cavity that has reached the inner layers of your tooth. This is a problem that should be addressed right away so you have the best possible chance of saving your tooth.

  • What to Do If You Think You Have a Cavity

If you notice any of these cavity symptoms, it’s critical to make your appointment with Dr. John Carson as soon as possible. It’s extremely rare for a cavity to go away on its own, and once the cavity has formed, the enamel cannot regrow and will need to be filled in by a professional dentist.
