FAQs About Cavities

Getting a cavity is not an enjoyable experience. Unfortunately, some of the primary reasons why we get cavities are not entirely up to us. Maybe one of your parents has a history of poor enamel, or irregular tooth shape, which both can contribute to compromised oral health.

But what about those habits we can change? Look at the following FAQs to gain a better understanding of cavities and tooth decay.

How do your genes influence your risk of cavities?

You’re probably not the only person that’s wondering if it’s your own choices that are causing you to get cavities. In fact, it’s both your genes and your daily habits. About 60% of our cavities are caused or related to genetics. However, that doesn’t let you off the hook for your daily habits.

What habits can I cut out to reduce tooth decay?

Even though our genes do contribute to our teeth in various ways, cavities are still preventable. Consuming sugar and smoking cigarettes are huge factors that contribute to poor oral health. The tricky part is that both of those habits are extremely addictive. A comprehensive consultation with your dentist can help move you in the right direction.

What habits help prevent tooth decay?

In addition to eliminating negative behaviors, it’s helpful to build positive ones too. Focus on your oral hygiene routine to help you fight back against cavities. If you don’t already, begin flossing once daily. Preserving your gum health helps protect you from cavities too. You should also brush twice daily with toothpaste that contains fluoride. Remember to wait at least 30 minutes after brushing before eating or drinking so that the fluoride bonds to the tooth enamel, making the surface of the teeth stronger.
